OpenAI introduces ChatGPT agent

OpenAI announced ChatGPT agent, a product feature that combined web interaction, research, code execution, and document work in a virtual computer environment. The launch post said the agent could navigate sites, ask users to take over or log in when needed, and complete multi-step tasks. OpenAI described user controls, including permission requests for consequential actions, alongside a system card and added biological-risk safeguards.

Engineering relevance

Computer-use systems make an action boundary visible: research and drafting can become browsing, form entry, and file changes. The announcement is a reminder to distinguish observation from execution, require scoped authorization for consequential actions, and preserve review points. Product availability does not replace a team's own controls, task limits, or accountability for outcomes.

Unified agent workflow

OpenAI described ChatGPT agent as combining capabilities previously associated with Operator and deep research. The feature could switch between browsing, analysis, code execution, and editable artifact creation while working in its own virtual computer. The company positioned it for tasks that require both information gathering and interaction with web interfaces.

Control and safety framing

The launch post said users could interrupt the agent, take over the browser, and were asked for permission before actions of consequence. OpenAI also said it applied heightened biological and chemical safeguards under its Preparedness Framework and published supporting system-card material for the unified agentic model.
